Concert Review: The 1975
In the beginning of September I wrote a review on The 1975's debut album (x). It was amazing. Before the review/album release, I had the chance to see them live at the legendary Troubadour in LA. When I saw them there in late July, they had not yet released their album. On November 1st, I saw them again at The Observatory in Santa Ana. I could not even begin to tell you how different it was. It was in some ways a good different seeing the crowd evolve from a small group of indie rock music fans to an entire crowd of pushy teenage girls (I'm almost 20 and I'm not pushy, so I don't count as one of them). I was lucky enough to have a friend get to the venue early in the morning so that we could be the first in line and get the best spot in the house, front and center.
The band that went on before them was pretty good and the female singer was really talented. They loved what they were doing and it showed in their performance. The 1975 went on and started the show with the song "The 1975" and went on to play "The City" after. Matt Healy, or Matty (lead vocals) was amazing and he moved the crowd with his energy and passion. There was a new kind of confidence in him as he sang that was not there 4 months ago. Settle Down was incredible. The whole crowd moved as one as we danced and sang and got lost in the music. With them, it is easy to lose yourself to the music and forget that it's really fucking hot and your feet hurt from standing for countless hours. The love and passion that they have for the music they perform is evident. I have been to concerts where the artists look like they want to die because they hate the music that they make. I can tell you 100% that these guys are absolutely in love with what they do. Girls was my favorite performance of the night. In the beginning of the song you see Matty with one of the most genuine heartwarming smiles when everyone starts singing the lyrics along with him (you can kind of see it in the video I took of the song below).
My favorite part of the entire show, was when they came back on for the encore to sing Sex. One of the photographers for them was a good friend of ours and told us that if we wanted to meet the band, we would have to run out of the venue during Sex, which is the second to last song on their set-list. When it came time to go the six of us literally jumped backwards from our front row spots and had to duck and push our way through the densely packed crowd. It was like a scene from an epic movie, and what better music than The 1975 as our soundtrack. I've never had so much fun in my life. We were all pumping with adrenaline and still had the buzz and energy of the concert in us. The band eventually came out and we met Matty and Ross (the bassist). Adam and George (guitar and drums) came out as well, but they didn't come over to our side of the gates. They all took the time to take pictures and sign tickets for about 150 fans even though they were all hungover and extremely tired.
Both times I have seen The 1975 were incredible, but this time I got to share it with some of my best friends in the world and that makes all the difference. I have been to a ton of concerts this year, and this one puts itself at my favorite concert I've ever been to.
